Julie Mollenhauer
Julie Mollenhauer’s work is intuitive and each piece of jewellery is a collage of sensations. ‘I just start with something… I move it around, I feel the material, also with my eyes.’ She often works with beads, using textile techniques to create fluid, delicate necklaces and bracelets which slip, move and distort with the body. Julie’s recent work – a series of earrings – reflects her fascination with pairs. For many years she has collected postcards, utensils, plants, sculptures in sets of two, and now she makes pairs of earrings – similar but not quite the same.
Born in Kassel in Germany in 1960, Julie gained her goldsmiths’ apprenticeship in Göttingen before studying at the Vrije Academie in The Hague and then at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She has exhibited widely in Europe, Asia and the US and her work is held in collections such as the Marzee Collection, Museum Arnhem, CODA Museum and Design Museum Den Bosch, all in the Netherlands, as well as the Alice and Louis Koch Collection in Zurich.
