Neke Moa
Charged with cultural, political and spiritual energy, Neke Moa’s work traverses the past and the present, representing an authentic indigenous voice. Drawing on tradition and maintaining her Maori identity, she works mainly with pounamu (nephrite jade), creating sculptural stone pieces etched with undulating lines, sometimes painted with red enamel to imbue the pieces with a vital energy and a connection to the earth and her blood connection to Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Born in Auckland in 1971, Neke holds a Diploma of Design and Art from Te Waananga-o-Raukawa and a BA in Applied Arts from Whitireia NZ. Her work has been widely exhibited across New Zealand and internationally as part of The Handshake Project and Wunderrūma and can be seen in the collections of Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington, the Dowse Gallery in Lower Hutt and Auckland Museum.
