Rudolf Kocéa
The traditions of the master goldsmith lie at the heart of Rudolf Kocéa’s work. He prefers to work with metals. There is, he says, a familiarity to them and an appealing degree of control. Like an alchemist, he mixes silver and copper alloys to create subtle gradations of colour; like a sculptor, he draws into the metal using a chisel with extraordinary spontaneity and vitality. Inspiration comes from any- and everywhere – something seen or heard, or read in a newspaper. His simple forms are profoundly evocative and he communicates his ideas with a calm eloquence in jewellery and objects that are both sensual and readable, sculptural and graphic.
Rudolf Kocéa was born in 1968 in Xanten in Germany. After his goldsmiths’ apprenticeship, he trained as a jeweller and master goldsmith at the art academy in Hanau and then studied jewellery at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design under the tutelage of Dorothea Prühl, remaining there to complete his postgraduate diploma in sculpture. In 2014, Rudolf was awarded the Marzee Prize. His work is exhibited internationally and is featured in collections including the Marzee Collection, Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, CODA Museum Apeldoorn, Museum Schloss Neuenburg in Freyburg and the Technisches Halloren- und Salinemuseum Halle.
