David Clarke
David Clarke is (in)famous for ‘the subversive nature in which he responds to the entrenched traditions of silversmithing’, and it is this willingness to experiment and play inappropriately that sets him apart. He describes the process of creating as an ongoing movement, close to the elements, to the materials and the transformations they go through. Pivotal in the renaissance of contemporary silversmithing in the UK, he creates expressive and poetic domestic objects that are as engaging and intelligent as they are challenging.
Born in Nottingham in 1967, David was educated at Camberwell College of Art and the RCA in London. Alongside his own practice, he has guest lectured at a number of schools including Konstfack in Sweden, Rhode Island School of Design in the US, Alchimia in Italy and Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry in Japan. David’s work is held in collections including the Marzee Collection, the National Museum of Northern Ireland, the National Museum in Oslo, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas.
