Fragile and sensitive are the words Michihiro Sato likes to use to describe his jewellery. His delicate paper pieces recall environments where he most feels himself, where he feels part of his surroundings. In expressing this, Michihiro quotes Japanese art critic Masakazu Yamazaki: ‘Our desire for architecture would probably be divided in principle into two wishes, the one is to embrace space and the other is to possess space – these two always opposed.’ 

Born in Takasaki in Japan in 1961, Michihiro studied at Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany and gained his master’s from the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo. He now lives and works in Fukui in Japan and has taught at Itami Jewelry College and Osaka University of Arts. His work can be seen in the Marzee Collection, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Itami, the National Museum of Scotland and the Alice and Louis Koch Collection in Zurich.
